How Light Therapy Works

Discover the science behind our gentle, effective healing technology

Dual-Wavelength Coverage

660nm red and 850nm near-infrared LEDs cover 795.5 cm² in a single session. Both wavelengths penetrate deep into muscle and tissue, stimulating the body's natural cellular repair process across the full treatment area.

Enhanced Blood Flow

Therapeutic light improves circulation to the treatment area, delivering oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissue while supporting the removal of inflammatory by-products for faster recovery.

Hands-Free & Consistent

The flexible pad straps directly to the body, keeping every point of the treatment area in consistent contact with the light for the full session. No movement. No missed spots.

Timed, Automatic Sessions

Choose from 5, 10, 15 or 20 minute programs. The pad runs automatically and switches off when the session ends. Strap it on, rest, and let it work.

About the Photizo Flexible LED Pad, Small

The Small Photizo Flexible LED Pad delivers red and near-infrared light therapy across a 795.5 cm² treatment area. Unlike a handheld device, it wraps around the limb and works hands-free. Place it over the treatment area, secure the strap, and let it run for 5 to 20 minutes. No holding. No guesswork.

It is built for legs, joints and smaller treatment areas: a horse's tendons and fetlocks, a dog's elbow or knee, or most of the body on a cat or small dog.

Most Common Uses:

Tendon & Ligament Injuries

The pad wraps around the lower limb so the whole injury site gets consistent light for the full session. It supports Tendon & Ligament Strains, Splints & Overuse Injuries and Swelling Around the Joint.

Hock, Knee & Fetlock Joints

The pad wraps directly over the joint for full-coverage treatment. It supports Arthritis & Joint Stiffness, Sprains & Strains and Synovitis.

Dog & Cat Joints

On smaller animals the Small pad covers an elbow, hip or knee in a single placement. It supports Arthritis, Hip & Elbow Stiffness and Recovery After Injury.

Wounds & Post-Surgery Sites

Consistent light across a closed surgical site or healing wound. It supports Wound Healing, Proud Flesh Prevention in horses and Post-Operative Swelling.

Circulation

Improves blood flow and oxygen delivery to the treatment area, speeding the body's recovery response.

Inflammation Reduction

Helps the body manage both acute and chronic inflammatory responses without medication.

Research Backed

Photobiomodulation Research

Red and near-infrared light therapy is studied as a field. See The Research Behind It below for named, peer-reviewed equine studies.

Alongside Your Vet

The pad is an ancillary treatment. Use it under veterinary supervision and never as a replacement for veterinary care.

Safety Profile

Non-invasive, drug-free, non-ionising light. Check the contraindications in the instructions for use before starting.

How to Use

1

Prepare the Area

Clean the pad before use. The animal's skin or coat should be clean and dry.

2

Position the Pad

Place the flexible pad directly over the treatment area, LED side facing the skin.

3

Secure the Strap

Use the elasticated velcro strap to hold the pad firmly in place.

4

Select Your Power Level

Start at P1. You can build up to P4; if P4 feels too warm for your animal, drop back to P3 or lower.

5

Start the Session

Choose 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes. The pad runs automatically and stops when the time is up.

Safety Notes

Keep the light away from the eyes. Stop if your animal shows signs of distress. For serious or undiagnosed conditions, see your vet first.

The Research Behind It

Peer-reviewed evidence supporting light therapy for equine back pain, musculoskeletal injury and soft tissue healing in horses

Study 1

Light Therapy for Equine Back Pain

Haussler et al., 2020, Journal of Equine Veterinary Science (PubMed: 32067657)
  • Randomised clinical trial in 61 Quarter Horses with documented back pain
  • Laser therapy produced significant reductions in back pain scores
  • Significant improvements in epaxial muscle hypertonicity and trunk stiffness
  • Results supported a multimodal approach to treating back pain in active competition horses
Relevance to Photizo Flexible LED Pad

The Small pad suits the lower limbs and smaller muscle areas. For a full back treatment in one placement, the Large pad (2,305.5 cm²) is the better fit.

Study 2

Light Therapy for Equine Tendon & Ligament Injuries

Aliabadi et al., 2020, Animals, MDPI (PMC: 7459490)
  • Randomised controlled trial in 26 horses with tendinopathies and desmopathies
  • Pain, swelling and lameness significantly improved vs control group (P = 0.023, 0.008, 0.044)
  • Lesion percentage reduction statistically significant during and after treatment (P = 0.038, 0.019)
  • Findings support light therapy as a physiotherapeutic technique for soft tissue injuries in horses
Relevance to Photizo Flexible LED Pad

Tendon and ligament injuries are among the most common performance-limiting conditions in horses. The Small pad wraps directly around the affected limb, delivering consistent hands-free coverage across the full injury site for every session.

Treatment Protocol

Important Note Ensure the pad lies flat against the skin or coat with the LED side in direct contact with the treatment area. Secure the strap firmly enough to maintain consistent contact throughout the session. In cases of acute pain you can treat twice daily for 2–3 days, then go back to once daily. Do not use directly over the eyes. If your animal shows signs of distress during treatment, stop immediately and consult your vet. For serious or undiagnosed conditions, always seek veterinary advice first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Photizo Flexible LED Pad for animals

Is the Flexible LED Pad safe for all animals? +

Yes. The Photizo Flexible LED Pad is non-invasive, drug-free, and safe for use on dogs, cats, horses, livestock, and other animals. Always position the pad away from the eyes and do not use on animals showing signs of distress. For serious or undiagnosed conditions, consult your vet before starting treatment.

How long does each session last? +

The pad has four timed programs: 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes. It starts at 5 minutes and each press of the time button adds 5. The pad switches off automatically when the session ends.

Which power setting should I use? +

The pad has four power levels, P1 to P4 (24 to 96 mW/cm²). Start at P1 if your animal is new to light therapy. You can build up from there; if P4 feels too warm, drop back to P3 or lower.

Will my animal tolerate wearing the pad? +

Most animals settle quickly once the pad is in place. The light produces a gentle warmth and the pad is flexible and lightweight, making it comfortable to wear. It works best when your animal is calm and resting. Introduce it gradually: start with short sessions at P1 so your animal gets used to the sensation before building up.

How is this different from the Photizo Vetcare handheld? +

The Photizo Vetcare handheld treats one spot per press. The Small Flexible LED Pad covers 795.5 cm² in a single placement and runs hands-free for up to 20 minutes, so it suits a whole joint or tendon where consistent, uninterrupted coverage matters.
