How Red Light Therapy May Help Arthritis

Understanding the science behind photobiomodulation therapy for joint pain

Dual-Wavelength Light

Photizo Pain Relief delivers 633nm red and 850nm near-infrared light to the treatment area. These wavelengths are used in photobiomodulation, where light interacts with biological tissue and cellular processes associated with pain and inflammation.

Designed for Pain Relief

Photizo Pain Relief is intended for the temporary relief of pain and stiffness, as an adjunct to appropriate medical care rather than a replacement for it.

Drug-Free and Non-Invasive

No needles and no medication. Designed for straightforward home use alongside your existing pain-management plan. Always speak to your GP before changing your treatment plan.

41 Seconds Per Area

One press delivers one pre-programmed 41-second dose, then the device switches off. Treat point by point across the area, with the probe against the skin.

Common Areas People Use It

Place the probe directly against clean, dry skin and treat point by point across the painful area, following the instructions supplied with your device.

Knees

  • For localised joint pain and stiffness around the knee

Hands & Fingers

  • The handheld format makes it practical for smaller joints including the hands, fingers and wrists

Hips

  • Used over the area where pain or stiffness is felt

Shoulders

  • For localised chronic pain around the shoulder area

Back & Neck

  • For chronic pain and stiffness in accessible areas of the back and neck
i
Individual Protocols May Vary Arthritis affects every body differently. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, or are recovering from joint surgery, speak to your GP or rheumatologist before starting any new therapy. Do not use directly over the eyes.

How to Use It

This is the manufacturer's own guidance for chronic pain. Follow the instructions supplied with your device rather than a schedule from anywhere else.

Dose. One press delivers a single pre-programmed 41-second dose, then the device switches itself off. There is nothing to set.

Technique. Treat with the probe against clean, dry skin and press lightly. The manufacturer notes this briefly blocks superficial blood flow, and because blood absorbs most of the light, it helps the light reach deeper.

Frequency. Treat the painful areas once daily for five days, then two to three times a week.

Do not over-treat. The manufacturer warns that excessive daily use may over-stimulate and delay healing.

What to Expect

Response to photobiomodulation varies from person to person. Some users report a change in comfort relatively quickly, others notice no clear benefit. Use the device according to the manufacturer's instructions, and speak to your GP or physiotherapist if your pain is persistent, worsening, or unexplained.

The Research Behind It

Peer-reviewed evidence on photobiomodulation for joint pain. These studies test the principle, not this device. Wavelength and light source are noted for each so you can judge how closely they apply.

Knee Osteoarthritis

2024 Systematic Review

Oliveira S, Andrade R, Valente C, et al. Phys Ther. 2024;104(8):pzae073.
  • 10 placebo-controlled studies, 542 people with knee osteoarthritis
  • Photobiomodulation reduced pain at rest compared with placebo
  • The authors rated the certainty of that evidence as very low
  • They concluded it should complement established therapies rather than replace them
How this relates to Photizo

The studies used a range of devices and treatment protocols, mostly lasers. They investigated photobiomodulation as an approach and did not test Photizo Pain Relief specifically.

Earlier evidence

2019 Meta-Analysis

Stausholm MB, Naterstad IF, Joensen J, et al. BMJ Open. 2019;9(10):e031142.
  • 22 randomised placebo-controlled trials, 1,063 participants
  • Pain reduction beyond placebo was greatest 2 to 4 weeks after the course finished
  • Laser sources in the 785 to 860 nm and 904 nm ranges, not LED
How this relates to Photizo

Photizo emits 850 nm near-infrared, inside the band this review covers, but as an LED rather than a laser. Its 633 nm red output was not part of the evidence assessed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about red light therapy for arthritis

Can I use Photizo Pain Relief alongside my medication?+

Photizo Pain Relief does not replace medication or medical treatment. Do not stop or change prescribed medication because you are using the device. If you take regular medication or are under medical care for arthritis, ask your GP or pharmacist if you have any concerns before use.

How long before I notice a difference?+

Response varies from person to person. Some people notice a change in comfort relatively quickly, while others need longer or may not experience a noticeable benefit. Follow the recommended treatment schedule rather than increasing the dose or frequency if you do not notice an immediate change.

Can I use it on multiple joints?+

Yes. Treat each point for 41 seconds and cover multiple joints in one session. Allow at least 4 hours before returning to the same spot.

I have rheumatoid arthritis. Can I use it?+

Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune condition, not another form of osteoarthritis. Speak to your rheumatologist or GP before adding any new therapy to your care plan, particularly during an active flare or if you are receiving specialist treatment.

Can I use it for arthritis pain in my hands and fingers?+

Photizo Pain Relief is designed for chronic pain, and its handheld format makes it practical for smaller areas such as the hands, fingers and wrists. Treat the painful area point by point according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Can I use it alongside physiotherapy or injections?+

Photizo Pain Relief is intended as an adjunct to a wider care plan. If you have recently had an injection or procedure, ask the clinician who treated you when it is appropriate to use the device over that area.

Are there any side effects or risks?+

The manufacturer states there are no known side effects, but also notes that some people with chronic conditions may feel slight discomfort when they first start treatment. Do not look directly into the light beam. Read the precautions in the manual before you begin.

I take blood thinners. Is that a problem?+

The manufacturer lists anti-clotting medication among the situations where the device is safe to use, alongside pacemakers and other metal implants, growth plates in children, and diabetes. If you are under medical supervision for a chronic condition and are unsure, ask your GP or pharmacist.

Are there situations to avoid?+

The Photizo Home Care instructions (PLT-MDF-01-03-03H-VER 7.0) list these precautions: do not use light therapy on any cancer or suspected cancerous mass; do not use on areas directly over a developing fetus in pregnancy; anyone with a seizure disorder should avoid looking directly at the light beam; and do not over-treat, as excessive daily use may cause over-stimulation and delayed healing. Do not place the probe on broken skin or open wounds. The device is an ancillary treatment used alongside medical care, and you should not discontinue prescribed medication. Read the manual in full before use.
